Her symptoms crept up slowly. First she noticed just mild fatigue. Then, some mild anxiety, and how strange, she wasn’t able to think very clearly all the time (brain fog). Before long, occasional insomnia started. Yes, there was a lot of stress going on. Maybe that was all it was. Did the divorce cause the symptoms or did the symptoms cause the divorce? It was hard to say.
Symptoms didn’t go away. The condition was hard to describe because nothing was terribly wrong, and nothing was present all the time, except for the mild fatigue. It was getting really hard working full-time -- a part-time job would be better. There was no health insurance, and no money for physicians. One visit to a doctor didn’t provide either diagnosis or solution.
She tried exercising, but was too tired for vigorous activity and even gentle t’ai chi made her feel poorly. Dietary changes helped a little, but stress was increasing, and symptoms multiplied and worsened. Working a regular job was impossible. There was no energy for relationships and no money, just lots of fatigue and lots of work trying to survive.
Next was making the rounds to alternative practitioners – acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, psychotherapy, and other modalities, sprinkled with occasional doctor visits. Nothing really helped. Twenty years passed with still no hope for improvement.
